It’s hard to believe being college students and business professionals in the year of our lord 2019, that there was ever a time where tech wasn’t a centerpiece in all of our workplaces and homes. Before the introduction of widely used technology in places such as the workplace and society as a whole, the way we conducted business and life was a lot different.
Businesses specifically have used technology in order to breed an entirely new culture in the way coworkers and other professionals interact. Today, industry-focused technology can be witnessed enabling companies to connect with each other internally, in the forms of digital meetings, cloud interaction, and the ability to keep up to date with the progress of their work lives. Digital meetings in the forms utilizing apps such as Facetime and Skype has given the opportunity for co-workers to meet face to face without having to physically ‘meet’ at a specific location. The ability to meet over technology allows co-workers to easily and more efficiently multi-task. With other applications like HootSuite, a team could easily meet over Facetime and plan out a company’s following week’s social media posts without ever meeting up. This not only is good for business when you look at the reduction of costs. Cost’s associated with providing places and resources to have these meetings can be significant and the use of a virtual working environment helps to reduce those needs. In a bigger picture, the allowance for virtual meetings and the utilization of technology has reduced our use of fossil fuels and our reliance on public infrastructure, allowing for its resources to be used by citizens who truly need them. In the future, I predict more and more companies will utilize technology as a way to not only reduce costs when it comes to providing the resources it takes to have a brick and mortar business but also in a way to better connect itself with customers. Already it isn’t uncommon for company’s to have a live-stream in one of their stores in the goal to better study their target audiences and understand what customers find the most value in. Our example in class of Meijer highlights the use of technology to formulate how they should set-up their stores. Having a friend who works at Meijer gives a better depiction of how their corporate office operates, utilizing technology for meetings, strategic planning, and how to create powerful user interfaces such as their website. The collaboration technology at Meijer is crucial to being able to provide the best customer experience possible while hitting crucial deadlines.
